Synopsis:

The first in a wickedly seductive new Scottish historical romance series from New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Enoch!

Marry or lose their estate; that’s the devil’s bargain he and his brothers must follow. But wild Highlander Niall MacTaggert’s stubborn oldest brother wants nothing to do with marrying the sophisticated, pinky-out Lady Amelia-Rose his mother has chosen for him, even to save their land. Niall’s only goal is to soften up the London socialite and show his brother the warm beauty behind the shiny, polished front. But what Niall doesn’t expect to find is the woman of his dreams…

My review:

When I first saw the title of It’s Getting Scot in Here, I immediately thought of the Nelly song. Every time I saw the title, it made me smile.

Now, that I have expressed my love for the title, let’s get onto the review.

I thought that Niall and Amelia-Rose’s love story was perfect. Their romance was bumpy with obstacles thrown at them from all directions. That made me love it more!! I like perfect, fairy tale romances. But I also like romances that show that love is hard and not perfect. And in this case, it wasn’t.

It’s Getting Scot in Here is set in one of my favorite eras, the Regency era. The author did a fantastic job of describing what Regency-era London looked like. She also did a fantastic job of showing the tensions between the Scottish and the English. Niall, Aden, and Coll’s distaste at everything English were palpable. Amelia-Rose’s parents were the same way against the Scottish. I loved reading a romance that was able to keep to the era.

I liked Amelia-Rose. She was outspoken and not afraid to let people have it. Her actions at the ball showed that. I did feel bad for her. Her mother was status hungry. Amelia-Rose received 4 marriage proposals turned down because the men weren’t titled. I will admit, Amelia-Rose did come off as a snob at the beginning of the book. But considered how she was raised and what was expected from her, I didn’t expect anything less. So, it was interesting when she started to fall in love with Niall.

I understood why Niall was so angry at the beginning of the book. His mother, who left when he was 7, dropped a bomb on him and his brothers. In order for them to keep their lands, they need to marry English women. One had to marry a woman that she chooses. The other two can marry whoever they want but it has to be English. So yeah, I would be mad too. Then, Coll goes on a bender. Which left Niall to pick up his slack. Again, I would be mad too. But, as the book went on, and as Niall started to fall in love with Amelia-Rose, his anger subsided.

The sex scenes in the book were alright. If I had a complaint about anything, I felt that the sex scenes were understated.

The end of the book was a wild ride. So much was going on that I almost couldn’t keep it straight. I loved what Lady Aldriss did. I laughed out loud at that. I also liked how Amelia-Rose’s father finally stood up to her mother. I slow clapped at that. The author did a great job of wrapping up all the plotlines about Niall and Amelia-Rose. She did leave enough open for the other brothers to usher in the 2nd book.

I would give It’s Getting Scot in Here an Adult rating. There is sex (not graphic). There is mild violence. There is no language. I would recommend that no one under the age of 21 read this book.

I would reread It’s Getting Scot in Here. I would also recommend this book to family and friends.

I would like to thank the publisher, the author, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review It’s Getting Scot in Here.

All opinions stated in this review of It’s Getting Scot in Here are mine.

Excerpt: It’s Getting Scot in Here by Suzanne Enoch

Excerpt

Prologue

Once upon a time—in May 1785, to be exact—Angus MacTaggert, Earl Aldriss, traveled from the middle of the Scottish Highlands to London in search of a wealthy bride to save his well-loved but crumbling estate. Aldriss Park had been in the MacTaggert family since the time of
Henry VIII, when Domhnall MacTaggert, despite being Catholic and married, declared publicly that Henry should be able to wed as many lasses as he wanted until one of them got him a son. Aldriss Park was the newly minted earl’s reward for his support and understanding.

For the next two hundred years, Aldriss thrived, until the weight of poor harvests, the ever-intruding, rulemaking Sassenach, and the MacTaggerts’ own fondness for drinking, gambling, and wild investments (including
an early bicycle design wherein the driver sat between two wheels; sadly, it had no braking mechanism and after a series of accidents nearly began a war within the MacTaggerts’ clan Ross) began to sink it into disrepair.

When Angus inherited the title in 1783, he realized the old castle needed far more than a fresh coat of paint to keep it from both physical collapse and bankruptcy. And

2 Suzanne Enoch

so he determined to go down among the enemy Sassenach and win himself a wealthy bride. The English had made enough trouble for him and his over the centuries so they could bloody well help him set things right.

On his second day in London, he met the stunning Francesca Oswell, the only offspring of James and Mary Oswell, Viscount and Viscountess of Hornford—who had more money than Midas and a bevy of very fine solicitors—at a masked ball where he dressed as a bull, and she as a swan. Despite the misgivings of nearly everyone in Mayfair, Angus and Francesca immediately fell madly in love and married with a special license ten days
later.

A week after that, Angus took Francesca back to Aldriss Park and the Highlands, where she found very little civilization, a great many sheep, and a husband who preferred brawling to dancing, and he discovered that her

father’s solicitors had arranged to keep the Oswell family money in Francesca’s hands. This made for some very spectacular arguments because there is nothing more combustible in the world than an impoverished High-
lands laird in disagreement with an independently wealthy English lady about his own ancestral lands.

Over the next thirteen turbulent years, the estate prospered, and Francesca gave Angus three sons—Coll, Aden, and Niall—and with each one became more concerned that this was not a life for any civilized person. She wanted
to bring the boys back to London for proper educations and to live proper lives, but Angus refused, stating that what had been good enough for him would be good enough for his lads.

When a fourth child, a daughter, arrived in 1798, Francesca reached her breaking point. No daughter of hers was going to be raised with an uncivilized accent in a rough country where she would be ridiculed by proper Society

It’s Getting Scot in Here 3

and unfit to marry anyone but a shepherd or a peat cutter. Angus refused to let his lads go, but he allowed Francesca to take young Eloise and return to London—on the condition that she continue providing for the maintenance of the estate.

Francesca reluctantly agreed, but given that she controlled the purse strings, she had her own conditions to try to keep some influence with her wild sons: All three boys must marry before their sister, they must wed proper Englishwomen, and at least one of them must marry some-
one of her choosing.

She knew Angus would raise them as he pleased, but they were her children, too, by God, and she meant to see to it that they had some semblance of propriety in their lives—she was a viscount’s daughter, after all, and certain things would be expected of her offspring. She refused to
allow them to be viewed as unsophisticated wild men by her London neighbors and she remained determined to have a presence in their lives.

To enforce her will, she convinced (or rather, coerced)Angus to put his signature to the agreement, which contained this provision: If young Eloise MacTaggert did marry before any of the boys, Francesca would cut off all funds to the estate. If they were to insist on defiance, they would have a heavy price to pay for it—one they and their tenants could not afford.

Angus had no choice but to agree and considering that Coll, the oldest, was only twelve at the time of Francesca’s departure and Eloise was but a wee bairn, he was willing to wager that he would have time to renegotiate. Angus and Francesca remained married, but neither would bend enough to visit the other ever again. As far as the lads were concerned, their mother had abandoned them.

In the spring of 1816, Angus received a letter from Francesca announcing their daughter’s engagement, and he

4 Suzanne Enoch

promptly collapsed. He’d hoped his sons would have found themselves Scottish lasses by now and shown their mother she couldn’t control their lives after all, but the lads were defiant and wouldn’t be rushed. Now it appeared to be too late.

He summoned his sons to his apparent deathbed and confessed all—Francesca funding the estate, the pernicious agreement, and their mother’s grasping claws, which he explained was a symptom of all Englishwomen and their weak, clinging, cloying ways. For the sake of the property and their tenants, the young men must go to London. At once. No sense even taking time to put him in the ground, much less mourn him, because Francesca wouldn’t excuse the loss of time and they needed to marry before their sister.

The lads—grown men, now—were not at all happy suddenly to learn about the responsibilities and rules foisted upon them by a woman they barely remembered. Being wily, freehearted, and exceptionally handsome men accustomed to doing things their way and certainly not bowing to the demands of a demented Englishwoman, they determined to go down to London not to comply, but to outwit their mother and upend any plans she had for them. And thus, dear reader begins our story.

IT’S GETTING SCOT IN HERE

The Wild Wicked Highlanders Series

Suzanne Enoch

The first in a wickedly seductive new Scottish historical romance series from New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Enoch, IT’S GETTING SCOT IN HERE (St. Martin’s Paperbacks, February 26, 2019, $7.99) crosses two sweethearts from separate worlds. Readers find out what happens when a headstrong leading lady, who refuses to marry someone she
doesn’t love, meets an off-limits ruffian from the barbaric Highlands.

London socialite Amelia-Rose Baxter is nobody’s fool. Her parents may want her to catch a title, but she will never change who she is for the promise of marriage. Her husband will be a man who can appreciate her sharp mind as well as her body. A sophisticated man who loves life in
London. A man who considers her his equal—and won’t try to tame her wild heart…

Rough, rugged Highlander Niall MacTaggert and his brothers know the rules: the eldest must marry or lose the ancestral estate, period. But Niall’s eldest brother just isn’t interested in the lady his mother selected. Is it because Amelia-Rose is just too. . . Free-spirited? Yes. Brazen? Aye. Surely Niall can find a way to soften up the whip-smart lass and make her the perfect match for his brother for the sake of the family.

Instead, it’s Niall who tempts Amelia-Rose, despite her reservations about barbarian Highlanders. Niall finds the lass nigh irresistible as well, but he won’t make the mistake his father did in marrying an Englishwoman who doesn’t like the Highlands. Does he have what it takes to win her heart? There is only one way to find out…

SUZANNE ENOCH grew up in Southern California, where she still balances her love for the Regency romances of Georgette Heyer and classic romantic comedies with her obsession for anything Star Wars. Given her love of food and comfy chairs, she may, in fact, be a Hobbit. She has written more than 35 romance novels, including traditional Regencies, Historical Romance,
and contemporary Romantic Suspense. When she isn’t working on her next book she is trying to learn to cook, and wishes she had an English accent. She is the bestselling author of Scandalous Brides series, The Scandalous Highlanders series, and One Hot Scot.

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Wars. So here what I have read/are reading/will be reading.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Personal

Miss R: She is finally doing great, health-wise. Then a huge bomb is dropped at her preschool. A couple of kids have the flu. Considering how easily she gets colds/lung infections, I have been Lysoling her room like crazy. But, she started coughing Monday night. So I’m hoping that it’s because of the crazy weather we have had lately and not because she’s coming down with something. I also found out that she was allergic to lions the other day. When she told me, she was dead serious. I am not sure how she knows she’s allergic to lions but I’ll take her at her word…lol.

Miss B: Oh where to start with Miss B. Remember the homework/classwork drama? Well, it got worse. Her science teacher updated PowerSchool over the weekend. She was missing 6 items. Guess what she spent Monday and Tuesday doing? Yup, she made up every single piece of work that she missed. She had a Dr’s appt on Monday and I brought it up to the Dr. The Dr talked to Miss B and stressed how important homework was. But she also said that kids with learning disabilities that are combined with ADHD have a harder time in middle school with remembering to turn work in. That high school will get better. What else came out of that Dr’s appointment? Miss B’s vitamin D levels were abnormally low. So, she has prescribed a super pill of vitamin D for 8 weeks. Which I have to pick up today.

Mr. Z: He has been surprisingly low key. We finished paying off his overnight class trip. Because he is doing so well in school, we got him a phone. BK ordered a SIM card from Mint Mobile. We installed it in my old Moto G, assigned him a phone number and bam, he has a phone now. Honestly, I think BK was more excited about the phone than Mr. Z was.

Me: I have discovered the wonderful world of podcasts. Right now, I am listening to The Vanished. But if there are any bookish ones out there, I would be thrilled to listen to them!!! I am in the middle of a Hashi’s flare and my whole body hurts :(. But, I’ll get over it and just chalk it up to me getting old. I also quit World of Warcraft. After 12 years of playing, I decided it was time to part ways. So what am I playing now? Final Fantasy 14. Amazon Prime and Twitch are running a special. If you download through Twitch, you get a month of Final Fantasy 14 free from Amazon. A whole flipping month. I couldn’t pass that up. I am enjoying it. It’s going to be $13.99 a month for a subscription and I think I might go for it. Of course, I will have to buy the expansion packages…lol. I want to full experience!!

Reading/Reviews:

I am right where I want to be review-wise. Reading-wise, I am behind. I blame it on the podcasts…lol. But, I am not missing publication dates or anything like that, so I’m good.

I am still plugging along at fixing my old blog posts. I haven’t spent much time on it since I downloaded Final Fantasy. I am hoping to knock off at least 5 today. Notice that I said, “hoping“. Not putting much faith in myself on actually doing that….lol.

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Wars. So here what I have read/are reading/will be reading.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?

Personal

Miss R is 100% better. I had to take her back to the Dr on Friday to get her lungs checked out. She passed with flying colors. She is back to her mischievous, sassy, 5-year-old self.

Miss B has started off the 2nd semester on the wrong foot. Again, she decided not to turn in anything in ELA. But, she also decided not to turn in a project on the French Revolution in for Social Studies. She has until the end of the week to turn everything in or she can’t try out for softball and she can’t go to the Valentine’s Day dance on the 15th. A bit harsh but I am at the end of my rope.

Mr. Z is his regular happy go lucky self. He is my bookworm out of the 3. His favorite series is the Warriors Series by Erin Hunter. He has all of the books (there are 4 series written in that world). He is slowly working on getting the manga books written by her as well as novellas. Then he is going to start on the Survivors series (about dogs), the Bravelands (about monkeys), and the Seekers series (about bears). His report card was great. He made A honor roll.

I have been enjoying this warm weather. In my part of North Carolina, it has been near 80. Which are the temps we get in April. Last weekend, BK and I worked in the yard. Well, I worked in the yard while BK worked on some stuff that needed to be repaired under the house. We also plotted our garden for this year.

Reading/Reviews:

I am right where I am supposed to be in the reading/review department.

Remember those huge tasks that I said I undertook last week? Well, I finished reorganizing my Goodreads shelf. I now have a Read shelf, a Currently Reading shelf, a Want to Read shelf, a TBR shelf, and a waiting to be reviewed shelf. That was an undertaking. I started at the end of my Want to Read shelf and worked backward. I got rid of any books that were no longer on Amazon (got the screen with the dogs), any books that were part of a series that I haven’t read, and books that made me go “What was I thinking“. It took me 5 days to do. It would have been shorter but the freaking shelf reset itself and I had to start over.

Now, I need to get started on fixing my blog posts. That is going to be another huge undertaking.

I have been doing more blog tours and I signed up for ARC teams. I am trying to figure out how to contact publishers on NetGalley (mainly Loveswept) to let them know I am available to do those. If someone knows, shoot me an email via my contact form, please!! I also revamped my NetGalley bio to say that.

After She's Gone: A Novel (Hanne Lagerlind-Schon Book 2) by [Grebe, Camilla]

click on the picture for Amazon link

In a small backwater town in Sweden, a young boy with a dark secret comes across a diary. As a cold case investigation suddenly becomes eerily current, a police investigator mysteriously disappears. What links these seemingly random events?

As atrocious acts from the past haunt the present and lives are changed forever, some will struggle to remember – while others struggle to forget . . .

The new thriller from the acclaimed author of THE ICE BENEATH HER, described as ‘Scandi-noir at its powerful bleakest’ by the Daily Mail and ‘unsettling, menacing and compulsively written’ by Heat, this is another slice of tense and twisted drama that will chill you to the bone.

I am 23% into After She’s Gone. It did get off to a slow start but it is starting to pick up speed. Jake, Hanne, and Malin are interesting characters. I can’t wait to see where this book takes them. After She’s Gone is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is February 26th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review on or after that date.

He obtained her – and now she must obey

The Alpha Prince

Brutality and tradition are a way of life for ferocious tribe leader, Kardos. Born different from the other princes, he strives to be the best–to earn his place and prove his worth.

After negotiating for a rare Omega not seen in his Land for over one hundred years, he is keen to present her to the High Chief and gain the recognition he deserves.

It doesn’t matter that she has mesmerizing beauty, or that her manner is too mild for his culture. It doesn’t matter that deep down, a craving burns strong to keep her for himself.

She must accept her fate – and so must he.

The Omega Gift

Sheltered all her life, Omega Shaya found joy in the gardens of her home, the protection of her sister, and the simplicity of her life.

But when the decision to save her sister suddenly puts her in the possession of a fierce tribal warrior, she begins to understand that life can be savage, and painful, and complex.

Alone, and with no way to protect herself, Shaya is determined to overcome the harsh treatment of a culture she doesn’t understand, but when she finds herself attracted to the Alpha’s dominance, she has to find a way to resist him so he doesn’t break her completely; body, mind, and heart.

Own To Obey is the first book in this couple’s story, but the seventh installment of the Myth of Omega series. This is a dark, steamy, Omegaverse romance. Cliff-hanger included. With the writing chops of Ian McEwan and the story-craft of Lisa Wingate, Karen Kelly weaves a shattering debut about two intertwined families and the secrets that they buried during the gilded, glory days of Bethlehem, PA.

A young woman arrives at the grand ancestral home of her husband’s family, hoping to fortify her cracking marriage. But what she finds is not what she expected: tragedy haunts the hallways, whispering of heartache and a past she never knew existed.

Inspired by the true titans of the steel-boom era, Bethlehem is a story of temptation and regret, a story of secrets and the cost of keeping them, a story of forgiveness. It is the story of two complex women—thrown together in the name of family—who, in coming to understand each other, come finally to understand themselves.

Bethlehem caught my attention when I got the invite to review. I thought that the cover was beautiful and the blurb made me want to read it. So I accepted the invite. Bethlehem is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is July 9th, 2019. My review should be after that date.

Inspection: A Novel by [Malerman, Josh]

J is a student at a school deep in a forest far away from the rest of the world.

J is one of only twenty-six students, all of whom think of the school’s enigmatic founder as their father. J’s peers are the only family he has ever had. The students are being trained to be prodigies of art, science, and athletics, and their life at the school is all they know—and all they are allowed to know.

But J suspects that there is something out there, beyond the pines, that the founder does not want him to see, and he’s beginning to ask questions. What is the real purpose of this place? Why can the students never leave? And what secrets is their father hiding from them?

Meanwhile, on the other side of the forest, in a school very much like J’s, a girl named K is asking the same questions. J has never seen a girl, and K has never seen a boy. As K and J work to investigate the secrets of their two strange schools, they come to discover something even more mysterious: each other.

I can’t wait to read Inspection. The blurb makes it seem like it is going to be a fantastic read!! Inspection is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is March 19th, 2019. Look for my review after that date.

An English professor starts a new chapter in her life and is swept up in a Jane Austen-esque romance with a modern day duke

Bonnie Blythe has modeled her life after her favorite books. If only her fiancé would get on the same page and agree to a wedding date.

She’s not at all bitter that her best friend is getting married to a man she’s known for less than a year, and Bonnie most definitely isn’t thinking about the best man to be, Theo Wharton. It’s just whenever she talks with the blue-eyed Brit, sparks fly.

When a shocking reveal ends Bonnie’s engagement, she accepts a summer teaching job at Cambridge—only an hour away from Theo. Bonnie isn’t ready for a new relationship, but the chemistry between her and Theo is impossible to ignore. But Theo’s been hiding the truth about his identity; will Bonnie be able to weather the plot twist and grab the happily ever after of her dreams?

I am very excited to read Smitten by the Brit!! I had read (and reviewed) Getting Hot with Scot and enjoyed it. So, I have high hopes for this book. Smitten by the Brit is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is May 28th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

One young woman learns the true nature of power–both her own and others’–in the riveting conclusion to The Waking Land Trilogy.

Sophy Dunbarron–the illegitimate daughter of a king who never was–has always felt like an impostor. Separated from her birth mother, raised by parents mourning the loss of their true daughter, and unacknowledged by her father, Sophy desires only a place and a family to call her own. But fate has other ideas. Caught up in Elanna Valtai’s revolution, Sophy has become the reigning monarch of a once-divided country–a role she has been groomed her whole life to fill.

But as she quickly discovers, wearing a crown is quite a different thing from keeping a crown. With an influx of magic-bearing refugees pouring across the border, resources already thinned by war are stretched to the breaking point. Half the nobility in her court want her deposed, and the other half question her every decision. And every third person seems to be spontaneously manifesting magical powers.

When Elanna is captured and taken to Paladis, Sophy’s last ally seems to have vanished. Now it is up to her alone to navigate a political maze that becomes more complex and thorny by the day. And worse, Sophy is hiding a huge secret–one that could destroy her tenuous hold on the crown forever.

Another book that I can’t wait to read. I have read the previous 2 books in the trilogy and I can’t wait to read Sophy’s story. The Soul of Power is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is June 4th, 2019. Look for my review after that date.
