Blog Tour: Styx & Stones by Carmen Jenner

Styx & Stones by [Jenner, Carmen]

4 Stars

Publisher:

Date of Publication: September 3rd, 2019

Genre: Romance, Young Adult

Where you can find Styx & Stones: Barnes and Noble | Amazon

Book Synopsis:

A heartbreaking mature YA novel from the author of the bestselling contemporary romance, Harley & Rose.

Cancer sucks … and then you die.

Alaska Stone is a walking wet dream.

My wet dream.

For years, I’ve watched her in the halls, wanted her, but she never knew I existed.

Not until she walked into my chemo session.

For me, it was love at first sight.

For her? It might take a little longer.

But hey, it’s not like we’re on a deadline or anything.

Excerpt:

“Come here,” Styx says, giving my arm a weak tug.

“Where?”

“Come lie with me.”

I laugh and shake my head. “I can’t. I’ll squash your lines.”

“They’re plastic; they’ll bounce back.” His face turns serious, and the desperation in his eyes claws at my resolve. “Get your sweet ass up here, Stones. I wanna hold my girl.”

It takes a little maneuvering with his central line and heart-rate monitor, and my IV, but eventually I settle in against his side and he wraps his good arm around me, holding me as tightly as his weak body will allow.

I wish we had the power to make time wait for us.

I’d make it wait forever, right here. I’d use up all of the seconds it’s stolen from me, from us, and the lifetime it’s going to steal from our future. If I had the ability, I’d hit pause right here, and I’d never let him go.

First Line:

Cancer sucks.

Styx and Stones by Carmen Jenner

My Review:

It is difficult to read books that involve kids and terminal illnesses. Having lost a family member to a terminal illness, I tend to stay away from these types of books. They are too depressing for me to read. They also remind me of my brother and his final months with his illness. Styx and Stones‘ blurb caught my eye. It made me laugh. So I decided to read Styx and Stones. I am glad that I did. The author did a fantastic job with this book.

Styx and Stones had a wonderfully written plotline. It was fast-paced with no interruption to the story flow, which was vital because the book goes between Styx and Alaska often. There was a tiny bit of lag in the plotline towards the end of the book, but I expected it.

I loved Styx. He was a snarky wiseass. His one-liners had me cracking up laughing at points in the book. But, at the same time, I was sad. His form of cancer was terminal. I loved that he was going to be there for Alaska, whether she liked it or not. He even went as far to talk to Alaska on Instagram but not tell her it was him.

I wasn’t too sure about Alaska at the beginning of the book. She came across as self-involved. But, that initial first impression was wrong. She was as snarky as Styx was. I liked that she was able to forgive Styx for his deception. She also had some pretty awesome one-liners.

The romance angle of the book was bittersweet. I loved watching Alaska fall in love with Styx. It was sweet and innocent. The trip that they took to go to Disneyland highlighted how they felt about each other.

There was sex in Styx and Stones. I enjoyed that the author had Styx and Alaska both be virgins. There was no real heat in the sex scenes, but there was a sweetness to them.

The end of Styx and Stones had me in tears. I can’t get into (significant spoilers), but it was one of the most emotional endings that I have read. The epilogue was what killed me, though. I loved it, but it made me cry even harder.

I would give Styx & Stones an Older Teen rating. There is sex. There is language. There is mild violence. I would recommend that no one under the age of 16 read this book.

I would reread Styx & Stones. I would recommend it to family and friends.

**I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book**

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Wars.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

What I am currently reading:

Wilder Girls by Rory Power:

It’s been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty’s life out from under her.

It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don’t dare wander outside the school’s fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything.

But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there’s more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true.

I picked Wilder Girls up from the library today and I am about 1/4 of a way into it. Not sure how I feel about it, though.

Wilder Girls is currently available for purchase. I will not be reviewing this book on my blog. Maybe on Goodreads

The Truth About Cowboys by Lisa Renee Jones:

Steamy, sexy, and laugh-out-loud funny, THE TRUTH ABOUT COWBOYS is a new contemporary novel that will pull your heartstrings and steam up your e-reader…

While I was off pitching in the big leagues, my family was back in the small town of Sweetwater, Texas, running the family ranch. Then tragedy hit and I discovered there were secrets that my family kept, problems they hid. I went home, left behind the money, women, and fame. I took over the ranch and took care of my grandmother. I took over hiding the secrets. Then she came to town. A smart-mouthed, clumsy, too-smart-and-too-pretty-for-my-own-good city girl hiding out to write a book. She’s right here, on my property, in the cottage my grandmother rented her without my permission, and she sees too much. She knows too much.

Now suddenly my world is spinning, and she’s shoving a baseball back in my hand while baking cookies with my grandmother. She’s the devil and an angel all in one fiery little package. I decide I’ll wait her out. She’ll go back to the city. Only suddenly I don’t want her to leave, and everything I’ve settled for in my life isn’t enough. I want to play ball and I want her, but there’s that secret that won’t let go, but neither will she.

I just started reading this last night and I am enjoying it. The characters definitely have chemistry. I can’t wait to see where this book takes me!!

The Truth About Cowboys is currently available for purchase. Be on the lookout for my review within the next few days

I recently finished reading:

Stolen Bloodlines by L.G. Rollins:

The heritage she never knew was hers. The future he never believed could be.

Jasper Wimple’s art is gaining popularity and life is falling into place for him at last. After meeting the Ambassador from China, a relationship that could propel him forward, Jasper’s street smarts tell him to steer clear of the man. But nothing could have prepared Jasper for a ghostly visit from one of the ambassador’s murdered victims, or taught him what to do when the ghost demands Jasper help protect his surviving wife and daughter.

Ju is done mourning a father she never knew for the entirety of Ghost Month, despite her mother’s insistence that they continue the tradition. Instead, Ju focuses on her upcoming audition—her one chance to enter London’s most prestigious dance school.

But then her mother’s life is threatened, and Ju sets everything else aside. Working together as new friends and unexpected allies, Jasper and Ju struggle to protect Ju’s mother and each other. With their own lives, the lives of those they care most about, and a budding romance all on the line, will they bring one of the most powerful men in England to justice before he silences them for good?

I really enjoyed reading Stolen Bloodline. Not because of the romance and steampunk. I liked those. But because of the paranormal angles of the book. Jaspar took taking orders from a ghost pretty well…lol.

Stolen Bloodlines is currently available for purchase. Be on the lookout for my review within the next couple of days.

What books I think I’ll read next?

Sweet Poisons by Natalie Bennett

Rhett Sullivan
Mysterious boy painted in shades of red.

Nova Markov
Eccentric girl dripping in sunshine.

He was the type mothers warned their little girls about—a cocky, rich asshole with a pretty smile, unapologetically insane and wild.

I was the type guys like him usually ignored—a free spirit who hid my crazy beneath an odd good girl facade and the art hanging on my studio walls.

We were opposites in every way but one, and we collided like two runaway trains that never had a chance of stopping.

What blossomed between us, our ‘relationship,’ was maniacal. We got stuck in a cycle of madness.

Rhett Sullivan became a bittersweet poison I couldn’t get enough of.

In the end, that’s what destroyed me.
Because in the end?

Our love was nothing but a lie.

Styx and Stones by Carmen Jenner

A heartbreaking mature YA novel from the author of the bestselling contemporary romance, Harley & Rose.

Cancer sucks … and then you die.

Alaska Stone is a walking wet dream.

My wet dream.

For years, I’ve watched her in the halls, wanted her, but she never knew I existed.

Not until she walked into my chemo session.

For me, it was love at first sight.

For her? It might take a little longer.

But hey, it’s not like we’re on a deadline or anything.

Merlin’s Shakespeare: Book 1 by Carol Anne Douglas

How can a high school girl deal with a megalomaniac? What would you do if Richard III manipulated your thoughts and took you places you didn’t want to go? Would that be any easier to take if you had a chance to meet Romeo and Juliet and Mercutio?

Beth has magical powers, but will she learn how to use them in time? The immortal wizard Merlin transports high school actor Beth Owens to Shakespeare’s London and the world of Shakespeare’s characters in search of a missing play about King Arthur. Mercutio guides her and flirts with her, but Richard III threatens her sanity, her friends’ lives, and the integrity of Shakespeare’s plays.

The Mercutio Problem by Carol Anne Douglas

Richard III still menaces Shakespeare’s world.

The immortal wizard Merlin again sends high school actor Beth Owens back to Shakespeare’s London and the world of Shakespeare’s characters.Beth faces danger from Richard III, who seeks to damage Shakespeare’s plays. Now Merlin gives her a new challenge: bringing a character she loves back from the dead.

But she risks losing her own life…

This is Book Two of the Merlin’s Shakespeare Series. Book One, Merlin’s Shakespeare, is also available.

The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young

The new gut-wrenching epic from the New York Times bestselling author of Sky in the Deep.

For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse.

For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again—a home.
