Blog Tour: Highland Crown by May McGoldrick

4 Stars

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press, St. Martin’s Paperbacks

Date of publication: April 30th, 2019

Genre: Romance, Historical Fiction

Where you can find Highland Crown: Amazon | Barnes and Noble | Bookbub

Synopsis:

Inverness, 1820
Perched on the North Sea, this port town―by turns legendary and mythological―is a place where Highland rebels and English authorities clash in a mortal struggle for survival and dominance. Among the fray is a lovely young widow who possesses rare and special gifts.

WANTED: Isabella Drummond
A true beauty and trained physician, Isabella has inspired longing and mystery―and fury―in a great many men. Hunted by both the British government and Scottish rebels, she came to the Highlands in search of survival. But a dying ship’s captain will steer her fate into even stormier waters… .and her heart into flames.

FOUND: Cinaed Mackintosh
Cast from his home as a child, Cinaed is a fierce soul whose allegiance is only to himself… .until Isabella saved his life―and added more risk to her own. Now, the only way Cinaed can keep her safe to seek refuge at Dalmigavie Castle, the Mackintosh family seat. But when the scandalous truth of his past comes out, any chance of Cinaed having a bright future with Isabella is thrown into complete darkness. What will these two ill-fated lovers have to sacrifice to be together…for eternity?

My review:

I know that I have said this in the past, but I am a huge fan of anything to do with Scotland. When I read the blurb for Highland Crown, I knew that I needed to read this book. It was set entirely in Scotland. Plus, I was intrigued by Isabella. A female physician in Regency England was unheard of. I needed to read this book. I am glad I did because it was fantastic!!!

Like I mentioned above, Isabella was an anomaly in Regency England. In that era, women were expected to be seen and not heard. An educated woman was rare. Even rarer was a woman physician.

The prologue was poignant. I wasn’t familiar with how Scotland was treated in Regency England. So, I wasn’t expecting it to be as bad as Sir Walter Scott said it was. Regret and sadness were tangible. It also gave a great introduction to Isabella’s character.

I liked Isabella. She had to be strong to become a physician in an era where a woman was considered property. When her husband was killed and a bounty placed on her head, she did what she had to. She wanted to make her that Maisie and Morrigan survived. Separating from them was her way to ensure that they wouldn’t be killed or hurt. Of course, that put her on a crash course with Cinaed.

I fell a little in love with Cinaed every time he appeared in the book. He was brave. What he did when he was injured showed that. The guy had two gunshot wounds, and he still killed two people. Impressive. He had a vulnerable side also. He was hurt over being cast out of his clan when he was 9. He didn’t know what he did to deserve that, but 21 years later, it still weighed on his mind.

I liked that Isabella was older than Cinaed. In the grand scheme of things in the book, it was a small blip. But for me, it was refreshing. She wasn’t easily disturbed by things that would send a younger girl into a faint. She also wasn’t a virgin. So the sex scenes weren’t all about her being eased into sex. Instead, they went at it.

The secondary characters brought depth to the book. Auld Jean, Searc Mackintosh, Sir Walter Scott, John Gordon, and Lieutenant Hudson were terrific. Lieutenant Hudson scared the crap out of me. He had one train of thought, and that was to get Isabella.

The romance between Cinaed and Isabella took a while to kindle. Which was OK with me. I wasn’t expecting them to fall in love while Cinaed was injured. I did get a small sense of Instalove after he was on the mend. It didn’t bother me. I actually expected it because of the era that the book took place in.

I thought the sex scenes were great. They were not graphic, and just enough was written to get my attention. Then I had to use my imagination for the rest.

The end of the book was great. I loved how Isabella’s storyline ended. It was what I expected. But, it was Cinaed’s storyline that threw me for a loop. There was a twist in the plotline that I didn’t see coming. It shocked me as much as it shocked Cinaed. With that plot twist, came the cliff hanger. I have said in the past that I do not like cliffhangers. But in this case, I do. It did what it was supposed to. It is making me want to read book 2. I need to see what Maisie and Morrigan’s stories will be!!

I would give Highland Crown an Adult rating. There is sex (not graphic). There is violence. There is no language. There are triggers. They would be the death of a spouse, abandonment, and war. I would recommend that no one under the age of 21 read this book.

I would reread Highland Crown. I would also recommend this book to family and friends.

I would like to thank the publisher, the author, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Highland Crown.

All opinions stated in this review of Highland Crown are mine.

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Wars. So here what I have read/are reading/will be reading.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Personal

This has been a rough past week. “What, you say. As of last Wednesday, everything was fine, you say“. And it was. Then everything hit the fan starting Thursday.

The majority of the rough week was centered around Ms. R. She developed a cough on Wednesday. BK and I thought nothing of it because its the time of year everyone is getting sick. Thursday, the cough got worse and wet sounding. By Thursday night, she was coughing every 5 mins. Thursday night was the worse. I think she only slept an hour. At 1-2am, she started to feel hot, so I took her temp. 102. Gave her a Tylenol and tried to settle her back down. Friday morning, her temp was at 101 and she couldn’t stop coughing. By mid-morning, her temp was 103 and not coming down with Tylenol/Motrin. So, I took her to the Dr. She had a pretty severe case of bronchitis. They prescribed a 3-day z-pack. I also have to bring her back on Friday so they can check her lungs. Thankfully, she is feeling better. She is back to her sassy 5-year-old self. But man, she scared me. I haven’t had a kid that sick before.

I don’t think I have mentioned this before, but Ms. B has a boyfriend. It’s a cute, innocent relationship. He’s all she can talk about. No dates, it’s more of a school romance. Which is fine by me. Anyway, she came home yesterday with a huge chocolate red rose that he gave her. 13 years old and he’s acting better than most men older than him. I’m impressed.

Mr. Z. is being well, himself. He is a huge reader (takes after me) and is currently reading The Warriors series by Erin Hunter. He is on the last series, A Vision of Shadows. He has bought 90% of those books himself. He got about $150 in Amazon gift cards for his birthday and Christmas. The last two books, he bought last night. He looked at me and said, “Now what will I read?” So any suggestions will be great.

I’ll end this section with something I call “Why my preschooler threw a temper tantrum“.

Ms. R threw a temper tantrum yesterday because Alexa said that water isn’t wet. Yup, you read that right. If you have one, ask it. The answer is interesting. Even more interesting was how I calmed her down. I asked her if the water was dry, would that mean the air is wet to the dolphins, fish, and whales? 100% stopped her tantrum.

Reading/Reviews:

I am doing OK in the reading and review department. Which is good. I am actually starting to participate more booky things. More posts, cover reveals, blog tours…etc.

I have decided to undertake two huge tasks. One: I am reorganizing my Goodreads shelves. I realized yesterday that I didn’t have a TBR shelf. That all of my want to read and TBR books are mixed together. I started that yesterday and I am about halfway done. The other thing I am doing? Well, I am going back to the beginning of my blog and fixing my blog posts. Changing covers (if the covers have changed), fixing broken links, spell checking/grammar checking with Hemingway Editor, changing the blurbs if needed, adding publication date/publisher/genre. Fun times!!

What I am currently reading:

The Perfect Girlfriend

click on the picture for Amazon link

Juliette loves Nate. She will follow him anywhere. She’s even become a flight attendant for his airline, so she can keep a closer eye on him.

They are meant to be.

The fact that Nate broke up with her six months ago means nothing. Because Juliette has a plan to win him back. She is the perfect girlfriend. And she’ll make sure no one stops her from getting exactly what she wants.

True love hurts, but Juliette knows it’s worth all the pain…

I am about 25% into this book and I am loving it. I’m not going to give too much away except that Juliette is cray-cray. The Perfect Girlfriend is currently on pre-order. It’s expected publication date is March 26th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

I recently finished reading

Shattered Reflections

Shattered Reflections: Fire and Ice were never meant to coexist (McAllister Justice Series Book 5) by [Garrett, Reily]

click on the picture for Amazon link

Strong-willed and stubborn, Kathryn Nugle enters a man’s profession, untested, inexperienced, and determined to solve a decade-old puzzle.

Intuition flagged her client’s deception but didn’t solve the mystery of his jacket’s crimson stain, yet blood doesn’t lie. When the victim leaves damning evidence behind, fate throws Kathryn into a cascade of events that will challenge her survival skills.
Mathew McAllister is the eldest of six siblings, all current or former detectives. Practical jokes and pranks are part and parcel of his daily life. The newest addition to the family fold is a wisecracking hacker who mangles his strained equanimity and tests his patience in Morse code, security breaches, and invasion of his cherished privacy.
When a vicious murder paints a target on one of their own, the McAllisters close ranks to ferret out the twisted intentions of a serial killer. For fans of Sandra Brown and Lee Child, Shattered Reflections is an exciting thriller with a romantic twist.

I actually finished this on Sunday. I haven’t had the time to write the review yet. But, I will say this…..it is good!!! This is one of my favorite series. Shattered Reflections is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is February 3rd, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

Getting Hot with the Scot

IT’S TIME TO FLIRT WITH A MAN IN A KILT

Cassie Crow, a pop-culture reporter for a TV talk show, is focused on becoming a “serious” journalist. But when she stumbles into a kilted Highlander with a killer accent, Cassie decides that taking one night off from work and spending it with a sexy Scot couldn’t hurt. . .

Logan Reid has built a career on his charm, hosting a series of off-the-wall hijinks on the Web. But when the Scottish prankster meets the all-American, equal parts intelligent and irresistible Cassie, Logan realizes that one night of fun won’t be enough. Could it be that this career-focused, commitment-phobic couple is finally ready to take a chance at true and lasting love?

This was from last weeks WWW Wednesday. What I wrote then about the book is still the same. Getting Hot with the Scot is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is April 30th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

Friends with Benefits

Friends with Benefits: A Steamy College Romance (Beta Brothers #2) by [Kelly, Hazel]

Carter’s been crazy about Nina since the first time he saw her emerald eyes, but his fratastic reputation landed him in the friend zone before he even had a chance to say, “How you doin’?”

So when Nina suggests they become friends with benefits, he can’t believe his luck.

After all, once he’s gotten in her pants, winning her heart should be easy… right?

No real reason why I accepted the request to review email. I figured that I needed a hot, smutty read every once in a while. Friends with Benefits is currently available for purchase. Look for my review at some point within the next couple of weeks.

After She’s Gone

After She's Gone by [Grebe, Camilla]

I love a good mystery. After She’s Gone looks like a fantastic one!! After She’s Gone is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is February 26th, 2019. Look for my review after that date.

The Winter of the Witch

The Winter of the Witch: A Novel (Winternight Trilogy Book 3) by [Arden, Katherine]

Following their adventures in The Bear and the Nightingale and The Girl in the Tower, Vasya and Morozko return in this stunning conclusion to the bestselling Winternight Trilogy, battling enemies mortal and magical to save both Russias, the seen and the unseen.

The Grand Prince is in a rage, choosing allies that will lead him on a path to war and ruin. A wicked demon returns, stronger than ever and determined to spread chaos. Caught at the center of the conflict is Vasya, who finds the fate of two worlds resting on her shoulders. Her destiny uncertain, Vasya will uncover surprising truths about herself and her history as she desperately tries to save Russia, Morozko, and the magical world she treasures. But she may not be able to save them all.

I can’t even begin to tell everyone how excited I am to be reading this book. It was one of my must reads for 2019. I want to know how Vasya and Morozko’s story ends!! The Winter of the Witch is currently available to buy. Look for my review at some point within the next couple of weeks.

So that’s it. Be on the lookout for the reviews of all these books in the near future.
