My review

Juliette is in love with Nate. Does it matter that they had broken up six months earlier and Nate wants nothing to do with her? No. Because Juliette has a plan to win over Nate. And she will do anything to stick to the project and get Nate. Anything.

When I started reading The Perfect Girlfriend, I wasn’t expecting the main character to be crazy. I mean it, she was mad. I loved it!! This is the first book I have read that is told from the protagonist’s side. Again, loved it!! Juliette was the perfect antihero.

I will admit, I did feel bad for her. Juliette didn’t have the best life growing up. She was responsible for her 4-year-old brother at ten years old. When he fell into the pond and drowned, she was blamed. She became an outcast at school, with kids teasing her or ignoring her. Boarding school was no better. Bella and her friends bullied Juliette. Then, she was used by a mystery boy at the one party she went too. All those incidents helped shape her into a stalker. I thought to myself, at different points in the book, what if she got help when she was younger. What if she didn’t go to boarding school. Would she have turned out differently?

Nate bothered me. I couldn’t see what Juliette saw in Nate. There was zero personality. I didn’t see the appeal. He didn’t even treat her nice when they were dating. At the risk of repeating myself, what on earth did she see in him? Of course, it was revealed at the end of the book exactly what the appeal was.

Same goes with Bella. I didn’t understand why Juliette was stalking both Nate and Bella. Then it was mentioned that they were brother and sister. I then had a “Gotcha moment.” I still didn’t get the whole obsession with Bella until the end of the book. Then I was like “OOOOOO, makes sense now.

I loved watching Juliette’s stalking escalate. She started small, breaking into Nate’s apartment/logging into his Facebook/getting a job where he worked. She went bigger, putting a spyware app on his phone and computer/showing up at events where Bella would be/bringing friends over to Nate’s apartment. When she went huge, she went huge. I’m not going to say what, but I was amazed that she was able to pull off what she did.

I was not thrilled with the end of the book. The book was excellent up to the last few chapters. Then it seemed like everything was rushed. I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did. Saying that I was underwhelmed was an understatement. It was the ending that lowered my review from 4 stars to 3 stars.

I would give The Perfect Girlfriend an Adult rating. There are sex and mentions of sexual situations (nothing graphic). There is violence. There is language. There are triggers. They would be bullying, stalking, the death of a sibling, and the death of a parent. I would recommend that no one under the age of 21 read this book.

I would reread The Perfect Girlfriend. I would also recommend this book to family and friends.

I would like to thank the publisher, the author, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review The Perfect Girlfriend.

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Wars. So here what I have read/are reading/will be reading.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Personal

This has been a rough past week. “What, you say. As of last Wednesday, everything was fine, you say“. And it was. Then everything hit the fan starting Thursday.

The majority of the rough week was centered around Ms. R. She developed a cough on Wednesday. BK and I thought nothing of it because its the time of year everyone is getting sick. Thursday, the cough got worse and wet sounding. By Thursday night, she was coughing every 5 mins. Thursday night was the worse. I think she only slept an hour. At 1-2am, she started to feel hot, so I took her temp. 102. Gave her a Tylenol and tried to settle her back down. Friday morning, her temp was at 101 and she couldn’t stop coughing. By mid-morning, her temp was 103 and not coming down with Tylenol/Motrin. So, I took her to the Dr. She had a pretty severe case of bronchitis. They prescribed a 3-day z-pack. I also have to bring her back on Friday so they can check her lungs. Thankfully, she is feeling better. She is back to her sassy 5-year-old self. But man, she scared me. I haven’t had a kid that sick before.

I don’t think I have mentioned this before, but Ms. B has a boyfriend. It’s a cute, innocent relationship. He’s all she can talk about. No dates, it’s more of a school romance. Which is fine by me. Anyway, she came home yesterday with a huge chocolate red rose that he gave her. 13 years old and he’s acting better than most men older than him. I’m impressed.

Mr. Z. is being well, himself. He is a huge reader (takes after me) and is currently reading The Warriors series by Erin Hunter. He is on the last series, A Vision of Shadows. He has bought 90% of those books himself. He got about $150 in Amazon gift cards for his birthday and Christmas. The last two books, he bought last night. He looked at me and said, “Now what will I read?” So any suggestions will be great.

I’ll end this section with something I call “Why my preschooler threw a temper tantrum“.

Ms. R threw a temper tantrum yesterday because Alexa said that water isn’t wet. Yup, you read that right. If you have one, ask it. The answer is interesting. Even more interesting was how I calmed her down. I asked her if the water was dry, would that mean the air is wet to the dolphins, fish, and whales? 100% stopped her tantrum.

Reading/Reviews:

I am doing OK in the reading and review department. Which is good. I am actually starting to participate more booky things. More posts, cover reveals, blog tours…etc.

I have decided to undertake two huge tasks. One: I am reorganizing my Goodreads shelves. I realized yesterday that I didn’t have a TBR shelf. That all of my want to read and TBR books are mixed together. I started that yesterday and I am about halfway done. The other thing I am doing? Well, I am going back to the beginning of my blog and fixing my blog posts. Changing covers (if the covers have changed), fixing broken links, spell checking/grammar checking with Hemingway Editor, changing the blurbs if needed, adding publication date/publisher/genre. Fun times!!

I am about 25% into this book and I am loving it. I’m not going to give too much away except that Juliette is cray-cray. The Perfect Girlfriend is currently on pre-order. It’s expected publication date is March 26th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

Strong-willed and stubborn, Kathryn Nugle enters a man’s profession, untested, inexperienced, and determined to solve a decade-old puzzle.

Intuition flagged her client’s deception but didn’t solve the mystery of his jacket’s crimson stain, yet blood doesn’t lie. When the victim leaves damning evidence behind, fate throws Kathryn into a cascade of events that will challenge her survival skills.
Mathew McAllister is the eldest of six siblings, all current or former detectives. Practical jokes and pranks are part and parcel of his daily life. The newest addition to the family fold is a wisecracking hacker who mangles his strained equanimity and tests his patience in Morse code, security breaches, and invasion of his cherished privacy.
When a vicious murder paints a target on one of their own, the McAllisters close ranks to ferret out the twisted intentions of a serial killer. For fans of Sandra Brown and Lee Child, Shattered Reflections is an exciting thriller with a romantic twist.

I actually finished this on Sunday. I haven’t had the time to write the review yet. But, I will say this…..it is good!!! This is one of my favorite series. Getting Hot with the Scot

IT’S TIME TO FLIRT WITH A MAN IN A KILT

But when the Scottish prankster meets the all-American, equal parts intelligent and irresistible Cassie, Logan realizes that one night of fun won’t be enough. Could it be that this career-focused, commitment-phobic couple is finally ready to take a chance at true and lasting love?

This was from last weeks WWW Wednesday. What I wrote then about the book is still the same. Getting Hot with the Scot is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is April 30th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

But when the scandalous truth of his past comes out, any chance of Cinaed having a bright future with Isabella is thrown into complete darkness. This was a no brainer when I was approached to with the request to review this book. It takes place in Scotland and it takes place in my favorite era. Highland Crown is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is April 30th, 2019. Look for my review after that date.

Friends with Benefits

Friends with Benefits: A Steamy College Romance (Beta Brothers #2) by [Kelly, Hazel]

Carter’s been crazy about Nina since the first time he saw her emerald eyes, but his fratastic reputation landed him in the friend zone before he even had a chance to say, “How you doin’?”

So when Nina suggests they become friends with benefits, he can’t believe his luck.

After all, once he’s gotten in her pants, winning her heart should be easy… right?

No real reason why I accepted the request to review email. I figured that I needed a hot, smutty read every once in a while. Friends with Benefits is currently available for purchase. Look for my review at some point within the next couple of weeks.

After She’s Gone

I love a good mystery. After She’s Gone looks like a fantastic one!! After She’s Gone is currently on preorder. It’s expected publication date is February 26th, 2019. Look for my review after that date.

The Winter of the Witch

The Winter of the Witch: A Novel (Winternight Trilogy Book 3) by [Arden, Katherine]

So that’s it. Be on the lookout for the reviews of all these books in the near future.

Personal

Is it possible to recatch a cold? Because I spent this weekend laid up with the same exact cold that knocked me out last weekend. Except it was worse. Again, I lived on Dayquil and Nightquil. Today is the first day since Friday that I have felt 100%.

It is officially the second semester of school. Miss B and I had a long talk about her schoolwork and what the expectations are. I also told her that she won’t be able to try out for softball this year if she continues to NOT turn her work in. Which made a huge impact on her. She wants to play softball.

Mr. Z is developing an attitude. His attitude is getting him in trouble. As of this morning, he no longer has his phone or Xbox. All because he copped an attitude with me when I asked him if he had done his morning chores. Which aren’t much and take him about 15 mins in total to do.

Miss R is being her 5-year-old self. Last night, while taking a shower, she told me that she was a wrinkly old man. I asked her why and she said: “Because of my fingers” in this derp mom voice. I have learned to say “Ok” and move on.

Reading/Reviews:

One of my favorite authors contacted me and asked if I would review the next book in her series. I was beyond thrilled. I am reviewing The Betrayer by Rebecca Neely. I wasn’t expecting the email and I seriously did a happy dance around my living room.

I am doing good with reviews. Right now, I am not behind with any. If anything, I am writing reviews for as far out as August. So, I am in a good place (knock on wood). Even with being sick, I was still able to push out quite a few reviews over the weekend.

Her: Unstoppable, workaholic, driven force of nature. Him: The exact opposite of that.

Phebe Stark needs a punching bag. No, on second thought, she needs a donut. No, on third thought, she needs to escape into a dark bar with a strong drink. She’s just been harassed, for the umpteenth time, by the slimy supervisor standing between her and a shattered glass ceiling at her high-pressure Atlanta firm. But then a tall, bearded, sexy lumberjack of a bartender saunters over, and suddenly Phebe knows she doesn’t need gin . . . she needs him.

Brody Cantrell didn’t exactly intend to become a bartender. He planned to help out at his ailing uncle’s bar for a year, then get an advanced degree and rise to the top of his field. Instead, he got a Ph.D. in Real Life from his customers. Brody thinks he’s seen everything—until he meets Phebe Stark. And when he gets a load of her fearless sexting skills, he just has to see what’s under that power suit. Brody’s certain they’ll have a good time or two—nothing serious. Then again, all these steamy messages and breathless trysts have him seriously considering . . . Why not?

I was stoked to be reading Let’s Talk About Sext. Then I read it. All I have to say is that I was beyond disappointed. Let’s Talk About Sext is currently on preoder. It’s expected publication date is February 19th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.

What books I think I’ll read next? (click on the pictures for Amazon links)

From the New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new novel about family, hope, and learning to love against all odds.

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she’s seen her fair share of them, and she’s excellent at dealing with other people’s tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it’s an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie’s old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren’t exactly thrilled to have a “lady” on the crew, even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the handsome rookie, who doesn’t seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can’t think about that. Because she doesn’t fall in love. And because of the advice, her old captain gave her: don’t date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping…but will she jeopardize her place in a career where she’s worked so hard to be taken seriously?

Katherine Center’s Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt, affecting novel about life, love, and the true meaning of courage.

I got this book because of the cover. Isn’t it beautiful? Then I read the blurb and thought “Hmmmm, sounds good.” Things You Save in a Fire is currently on preorder. Its expected publication date is August 13th, 2019. Be on the lookout for my review after that date.
