WWW Wednesday: June 26th, 2019

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Wars.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Miss R: She has been busy for these last couple of weeks. She had kindergarten testing on the 14th, our trip, Bible School, and being sick. Yup, you read that right. She has strep….sigh. But she had a blast at the beach!!

Mr. Z: Out of the 3 kids, his last couple of weeks haven’t been that hectic. The only thing he did in the two weeks was attend Bible School, go on vacation and….have strep. I was surprised at his diagnosis. Took him into the Dr for a cough and came home with antibiotics for strep. Still trying to figure that out.

Miss B: Her schedule has been hectic. I had an IEP meeting for her on the 14th. She then had Coding Camp (part of the school system’s STEM program) the 18th-19th. This week, she has a mandatory meeting for the Youth Leadership Program that she was accepted into and she has an orthodontist appt.

Me: I enjoyed the beach. But I forgot that North Carolina isn’t like Massachusetts when it comes to the sun. So I got a bad burn and now I am a peely mess. On the home front, we came home to our pool deflated and all the water out of it. So, gotta buy a new one on Friday. Not happy about that.

Reading: I finished all of my books on my ” What books I think I’ll read next?” list. Long car rides and some time on my hands helped with that. I have chiseled away at my NetGalley backlog. I am at 14 books plus 4 books that are older than 3 months. Go me!!

Reviews: I am behind on writing my reviews. But I’m not bothered by that. I’m only behind by 2 reviews.

Blog: I changed my blog format again. I actually like this one better than the one I had.

What I am currently reading:

The Truth Behind the Lie: A Novel by [Lövestam, Sara]

The Truth Behind The Lie is Sara Lövestam’s award-winning and gripping novel about blurred lines, second chances, and the lengths one will go to for the truth.

When a six-year-old girl disappears and calling the police isn’t an option, her desperate mother Pernilla turns to an unlikely source for help. She finds a cryptic ad online for a private investigator:
“Need help, but can’t contact the police?”

That’s where Kouplan comes in. He’s an Iranian refugee living in hiding. He and his brother were forced to leave Iran after their involvement with a radical newspaper hated by the regime was discovered. Kouplan’s brother disappeared, and he hasn’t seen him in four years. He makes a living as a P.I. working under the radar, waiting for the day he can legally apply for asylum.

Pernilla’s daughter has vanished without a trace, and Kouplan is an expert at living and working off the grid. He’s the perfect PI to help… but something in Pernilla’s story doesn’t add up. She might need help that he can’t offer…and a little girl’s life hangs in the balance.

I recently finished reading:

The Bridge of Little Jeremy by [GARAI, Indrajit]

Jeremy’s mother is about to go to prison for their debt to the State. He is trying everything within his means to save her, but his options are running out fast.

Then Jeremy discovers a treasure under Paris.

This discovery may save his mother, but it doesn’t come for free. And he has to ride over several obstacles for his plan to work.

Meanwhile, something else is limiting his time…

What books I think I’ll read next?

The Shadowverse: A YA Sci-Fi Superhero Adventure by [Gallo, John-Clement, Gallo, Francesca]

Regarded as “captivating” and “one-of-a-kind,” The Shadowverse is a Science-Fiction Superhero thriller with hints of the Young Adult genre. It is a story of destiny—that no matter who you are, where you are, or what your past is like, you can always achieve greatness.

Johnny Sparks longs for a greater purpose. After an encounter with a mysterious stranger, he and his friends are imbued with incredible powers—at last giving his life meaning.

But this dream soon disintegrates once one of the friends is taken by an alien warlord named Titan. In a rescue effort, the remaining group is sent across the galaxy in search of the only possible aid—an ancient, immortal warrior missing for centuries.

To succeed, the team must join forces to reclaim their friend and stop a sinister scheme devised against humanity by Titan and his empire. The conflict for the soul of the universe is set in motion, but even if the group prevails, they risk losing what it means to be human.

Give me one name. One person. And I will make them disappear . . .

When Sarah rescues a young girl in trouble, she expects nothing in return. But her act of bravery puts a powerful and dangerous man in her debt. He lives by his own brutal code, and all debts must be repaid – in the only way he knows how.

He offers Sarah a way to solve a desperate situation with her intolerable boss. A once-in-a-lifetime deal that will make all her problems disappear.

No consequences. No comeback. No chance of being found out.

All it takes is a 29 second phone call.

Because everyone has a name to give. Don’t they?

A Highlander Walks into a Bar: A Highland, Georgia Novel by [Trentham, Laura]

The timeless romance, soaring passion—and gorgeous men—of Scotland comes to modern-day America. And the rules of love will never be the same…

Isabel Buchanan is fiery, funny, and never at a loss for words. But she is struck speechless when her mother returns from a trip to Scotland with a six-foot-tall, very handsome souvenir. Izzy’s mother is so infatuated by the fellow that Izzy has to plan their annual Highland Games all by herself. Well, not completely by herself. The Highlander’s strapping young nephew has come looking for his uncle…

Alasdair Blackmoor has never seen a place as friendly as this small Georgia town—or a girl as brilliant and beguiling as Izzy. Instead of saving his uncle, who seems to be having a lovely time, Alasdair decides he’d rather help Izzy with the Highland Games. Show her how to dance like a Highlander. Drink like a Highlander. And maybe, just maybe, fall in love with a Highlander. But when the games are over, where do they go from here?

    1. Mr. Z finished his medicine today. Miss R has to take her next dose before bed. She should be fine by tomorrow night. But she’s still going to have to miss the last day of bible school and she’s mad about that.
