Book synopsis (from Goodreads):

Dive into a universe filled with magical creatures, from demons, “ifrits”, and werewolves to nymphs, witches, and superpowers-wielding entities. A must for fantasy and romance readers alike!

When Annabelle discovers that she is not the true daughter of the Alpha of her pack, her world, as she knows it, comes crashing down and she finds herself running to hide from the tyrannical Demon Lord who is hell-bent on finding her.

Seeking protection, she flees to the court of the Werewolf King. He’s arrogant, stubborn and discerning of her very being, but willing to defend her… for now.

Will the Werewolf King yield to the Demon Lord’s ultimatum and give her to the enemy or will she be the cause of a looming war between the two species?

More importantly, what does the Demon Lord want with Belle? She’s only a werewolf… isn’t she?

Trigger Warning: None

My review:

One of my biggest pet peeves when reviewing a book is when the synopsis is nowhere near what the book is about. A book’s blurb should be accurate and reflect what the book is about. For some reason, lately, I have read a lot of blurbs that do not describe the book at all. Mated to the Werewolf King is one of those books. I went into the book thinking that Annabelle was a runaway as described in the blurb. Instead, she was taken by Keith during the first two chapters of the book.

Mated to the Werewolf King did get off to a rough start but it evened itself out by the middle of the book. All the dark fantasy elements were in play in this book. I loved it!! It has been a long while since I have enjoyed reading a dark fantasy book. Usually, I get bored halfway through because not enough is happening. Not this book. If I had a complaint, there is almost too much going on and it did get a bit hard to follow sometimes.

I liked Annabelle and I felt bad for her. I mean, how would you feel if you found out that your parents weren’t your parents? Then you are taken by this angry werewolf, who can’t stand the sight of you, to live in his castle with his pack? I could understand her pettiness and her brattiness with Keith. She had information coming at her from 7 different directions. She had people after her that she didn’t even know existed until a few days before. Plus she had to deal with being taken from the only family that she had known. The maturity that she exhibited was great. I wish that certain other characters exhibited the same maturity.

I did not like Keith. While I could understand Annabelle being immature, there was no reason for him to be. He seemed to have two emotions: angry and very angry. He jumped to conclusions about everything and was very sanctimonious. In short, I wished that Annabelle picked someone else. Keith did leave a bad taste in my mouth he is the reason this review isn’t a 4 star one.

The romance between Keith and Annabelle seemed to happen out of nowhere. He went from distrusting and not liking her to being in love with her. All after he found out that she was a hybrid (demon/witch). Then he became a possessive angry wolf who was in love with her. Such a quick change of feeling for someone in a book made me get mental whiplash. The sex scenes, while hot, had a certain disconnect for me. I know it was because I didn’t like Keith.

The end of the book was very interesting with a few curves thrown in. I was a bit disappointed with how the storyline with Annabelle’s mother ended. I also liked how the epilogue had an epilogue and the author chose to write an alternative ending. Makes me wonder what is going to happen in the next book.

My Summary of Mated to the Werewolf King-3 stars:

I enjoyed reading Mated to the Werewolf King. It stayed true to the dark fantasy/paranormal genres and had some very interesting plot lines. But, I couldn’t get over Keith. He truly left a bad taste in my mouth.

Will I reread: Maybe

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Age range: Adult

Why: Language, sex, and violence
